College of Life Sciences Life Sciences Research Life Sciences Computing Academic Related Closing date 19 August 2013 This is a rare and fantastic opportunity to work with a team to design, imple! ment and maintain an integrated, scalable High Performance Computing and private cloud infrastructure that will underpin informatics research at the leading edge of both Life Sciences and Medical research. Working under the supervision of the Head of Computing you will be involved in the design and configuration of High Performance Computing infrastructure that will support the College of Life Sciences and the College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing and at the University of Dundee. The role holder will provide a leadership role within the Research Computing Infrastructure team and will work closely with computationally demanding research groups in the College of Life Sciences to design, promote and maintain the infrastructure solutions that these groups require to enable their extensive research portfolios. Background: The College of Life Sciences is one of the largest and most productive research institutes in Europe, employing over 1100 staff represent no fewer than 58! different nationalities with a focus on excellence in both re! search and service support systems.
We collaborate with the world's major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the fight against diseases such as cancer, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. The Research Computing Infrastructure team operate a significant High Performance Computing Infrastructure consisting of a Linux cluster, extensive VMware virtualisation and over 1PB storage including parallel GPFS filesystems. These systems are linked together via 10Gb Ethernet and InfiniBand networks. Principle Duties: Design of High Performance Computing Architecture.
Installation, configuration and maintenance of Windows (2008/2012) and Linux (RHEL/Centos/Ubuntu) based x86 systems. Installation, configuration and maintenance of Fibre Channel storage arrays and storage area networks. Installation, configuration and maintenance of low latency interconnects such as InfiniBand and 10Gb Ethernet. Management and configuration of Apache/IIS web Servers and JBOSS, J! ava Enterprise Edition systems.
Skills Essential: You will be a widely experienced systems administrator familiar with both Linux (Centos/RHEL) and Windows environment on a wide variety of x86 Servers. Understanding of Ethernet switching, routing and security. Dell, IBM and Brocade storage systems, arrays and storage area networks. x86 virtualisation systems such as Xen, KVM, VMware and HyperV.
Management of SQL/RDBMS such as Oracle, MS-SQL, MySQL and Postgres. Network, management and AAA services such as DNS, DHCP, SNMP, RADIUS, LDAP and Active Directory A background in High Performance Computing or Big Data and experience with large scale distributed computing problems. A team player with the ability to work using own initiative, deliver outputs within agreed timeframes and work under pressure. Experience of preparing technical proposals and reports.
Strong verbal and written communication skills. Desirable: In depth knowledge of C! isco switching and routing platforms. Experience of low latency High Pe! rformance Computing networks such as 10Gb Ethernet and Infiniband. Large scale, Parallel filesystems such as Lustre, GPFS or HDFS.
Enterprise Backup and archiving with Tivoli Storage Manager Knowledge of UNIX systems such as AIX and Solaris. Demonstrable proficiency in Scripting languages such as bash, Perl or powershell. Experience deliving webservices and Java enterprise services infrastructure such as JBOSS or WebSphere. Skills in a range of object-oriented programming languages eg (C#,.NET, Java, C++, PYTHON etc.).
Experience of developing Web Applications & Web Services. Skills in relational database and SQL programming skills. Experience of ITIL service management principles and change/release management. Qualifications Essential: Good first degree in Computing, Mathematics, Engineering or a scientific discipline.
