Did you know that students who don’t read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school? Our goal is to help all children become proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade and give them a better start to their futures! As a Reading Corps member, you’ll be trained to tutor elementary students who are struggling with reading. You’ll serve during school hours and receive comprehensive training and coaching throughout the school year. Full-time and part-time opportunities are available; starting in August 2023 and ending in early June 2024. Full-time members must serve 35 hours a week.
Member Duties : 1) Provide tutoring support for students in kindergarten through third grade who need additional practice support in learning to read. Tutors support a standard caseload range of students through daily tutoring support M-F during school hours, using a variety of scripted Reading Corps strategies, called interventions. 2) Conduct quick and easy literacy assessments, and enter the student data into an online data system. Tutors will use this data to monitor students' progress, plan, and set goals. 3) Participate in on-site coaching sessions (including tutor observations), review student progress, plan, problem-solve, and set goals; act on constructive feedback from coaching sessions. 4) Interact and speak with students in an age and developmentally appropriate way. 5) Build professional relationships and communicate regularly with school staff, Wisconsin Reading Corps coaches, and program staff regarding strategies, student progress, and ongoing training to improve your skills.
