Cardiology Research Nurse

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic clinical nurse to join a team responsible for delivering a 1.5 year research project funded by Marie Curie Cancer Research. The researc! h study will develop and test the feasibility of a randomised trial aimed at assessing an holistic clinical intervention for people with advanced heart disease who are approaching the end of their lives. Working closely with a full time research assistant the post-holder will play a key role in recruiting patients and delivering the trial intervention. The postholder will support the research assistant in coordinating, performing and delivering the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the study. The postholder will work closely with other members of the research team including a cardiologist, clinical palliative care specialist and a clinical trialist. Data analysis will be supported formally by a statistician.
Nursing education to degree level is essential and further evidence of ongoing professional development in cardiac or palliative care would be an advantage. The role will include recruitment of patients, carers and healthcare professionals. Experience ! of working in the field of cardiac care and/or palliative care! will be an advantage.
This post is fixed term, on a full-time or part time basis for 18 months.

The post holder will have professional responsibility for the direct and indirect care of patients and family members/carers enrolled in the FLAME research study (Future Care Planning for patients and families living with advanced heart Disease (FLAME study).
The post holder will hold an honorary NHS contract as a clinical nurse practitioner.
The post holder will ensure that the highest standard of care is delivered to research subjects and their families, in partnership with all members of the multi-disciplinary clinical and research teams in both secondary and primary care.
The post holder will support all research aspects of the study working closely with the study Research Assistant in accordance with the International Conference on ! Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice Guidelines (ICH-GCP) and MHRA guidance.
The post holder has responsibility and accountability for maintaining both clinical and research governance associated with the study.
In conjunction with the Chief Investigator, the post holder will liaise with statutory research organizations, research collaborators and sponsor organizations.
Main Responsibilities
- Manage, co-ordinate and support all research aspects of the FLAME study, with support from the chief investigator, in accordance with the International Conference on Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice Guidelines (ICH-GCP) and MHRA guidance.
- Assist and support the study research assistant (RA) in collecting and collating data associated with the study including the running and organisation of patient/carer forums as described in the protocol.
- Screen, recruit and consent subjects according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria ! and according to the study protocol, and where desired or necessary, fa! cilitate a subjectâs withdrawal from a study, in order to ensure the effective achievement of the study aims.
- Provide on-going direct and indirect clinical care, advice and information to patients and their families liaising with other members of the cardiology, palliative care and primary care multidisciplinary teams.
- Collect and collate appropriate clinical data and carry out study procedures as outlined in the protocol and in liaison with clinical colleagues including the reporting of adverse events.
- Participate in clinical trial monitoring and data management procedures internally and externally as required in order to meet the governance requirements of each study. In collaboration with investigators, develop and utilise study specific documentation to ensure that data is recorded accurately and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- The post holder will deputise as delegated for the Chief Investigator in his/her absence, atte! nding study/investigator meetings and liaising with research bodies in order to maintain communication and continuity for the research studies.
The Post holderâs work is primarily generated by research activities arising from the FLAME research study.
The post holder will be responsible to the Chief Investigator and the Trial Steering Group (TSG).
The Cardiology Lead Research Nurse will provide clinical guidance and professional management, work review and formal appraisal of performance.
The post is largely self-directed in terms of time and workload management and duties are performed without direct supervision after appropriate training.
The post holder will delegate/allocate work to other members of the research team as required.
Workload may be variable, dependent on the number and nature of the research studies and this will require flexibility of working hours to take account of stu! dy recruitment patterns.

The post holder i! s expected to make clinical and professional decisions autonomously and on a daily basis, including decisions involving clinical problems associated with the management and care of patients with advanced cardiac disease and their carers/families,
The post holder will also be expected to make decisions with regard to the operation of the research study itself, with appropriate reference to line manager and other clinical colleagues where necessary.
The post holder will act in the best interests of the research subjects at all times to ensure their rights are upheld, when identifying, screening, recruiting and managing subjects in association with the FLAME research study.
The post holder will coordinate and guide the patient and their family through the journey of clinical care in the context of the proposed research study.
The post holder will make independent decisions on the use of research resources arising during the study with suppor! t from the Chief Investigator.
Post holder will be responsible for resolving the majority of problems that arise within the context of the role, including both routine and more complex clinical issues, in liaison with the clinical team and/or the chief investigtor.
Routine issues are likely to involve: patient/ subject recruitment, clinical management of cardiac problems, liaison with primary care team, documenting and processing clinical data and clinical follow up data of patients and their families.
Complex issues are likely to involve: Dealing with difficult end of life issues in relation to cardiac disease and discussing these issues with patients and their families. Balancing the primacy of respect for patient autonomy with meeting study recruitment targets. Reconcile ethical issues in a complex working environment.

Person Specification
First Level Registered Nurse with relevant experience! at Band 5 or 6 level or equivalent, demonstrating appropriate competencies and skills for the job in this clinical setting.
Educated to degree level (or working towards).
Experience in the clinical assessment and management of patients with heart disease including heart failure and/or acute coronary syndrome and an understanding of current heart disease clinical guidelines and protocols will be highly desirable for this post.
Experience in palliative care will be highly desirable for this post.
Highly effective listening and interpersonal skills are essential.
Research experience including a working knowledge of ICH GCP Guidelines, EU Clinical Trials Directive and Research Governance Framework would be an advantage.
Post-graduate certification/diploma/Continuous and or evidence of on-going Professional Development in cardiac or palliative care would be an advantage.
The post holder will be required to demonstrate excellent team working skills wi! th ability to work using own initiative.
Time management skills and! ability to prioritise workload are essential.
IT Skills are highly desirable.
Evidence of ward management experience and clinical leadership would be advantageous
Dimensions
The post holder will work primarily in the Cardiology Department at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and will also include work at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. This includes screening and recruitment of subjects and their families in cardiology and care of the elderly wards at both hospital sites.
In the absence of the Chief Investigator the post holder will be responsible for operational management of the FLAME research study.
Key members of staff with which the post holder will interact will include primary and secondary care clinicians, Clinical Trial Manager, Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit, Management, Cardiology directorate, R&D Office, Support Services, Health and Safety and Risk Management.
The post holder is not primarily responsible f! or managing the study budget but needs to be aware of the resources available and the need to maintain costs within the limits of the project budget.

NHS Honorary Contract
An Honorary NHS contract will be sought for the successful post holder. You therefore must be eligible to hold an honorary contract with NHS Lothian, and must also be registered with the General Medical/Dental Council or Nursing & Midwifery Council if appropriate to the role.
It should be noted that the offer of appointment is subject to Occupational Health clearance prior to commencement of duty.
Salary
The role is grade UE06 and attracts an annual salary of £25,504 to £29,541 for 35 hours, each week. Salary is paid monthly by direct transfer to your Bank or Building Society account, normally on the 28th of the month. Salaries for part-time staff are calculated on the full-time scales, pro-rata to the Standard Working Week.
Pension Scheme
This role is grade UE06 and therefore the post holder is automatically included in membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme ! (USS), subject to the USS membership criteria, unless they indicate that they choose not to join the Scheme.
Hours to be Notified (HTBN) will automatically become a member of the USS scheme if their monthly earnings are deemed to be âqualifying earningsâ (equivalent to the HMRC monthly threshold above which their earnings are taxable). If the post holderâs earnings are not deemed as âqualifying earningsâ and therefore will not automatically become a member they can opt in to the USS Scheme.
