Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To organise the delivery of the Scottish Infection Prevention and Control Education Programme e-learning package dental students in Years 1-3 of the BDS programme and to be involved in delivery of e-learning materials and technical instruction relating to instrument decontamination for BDS students in years 3-5.
2. To monitor and review student completion of SIPCEP modules and provide regular reports to appropriate quality assurance standards.
3. To be responsible for ensuring that students maintain adequate records of attainment of learning outcomes and competencies in infection prevention and control as part of student assessment in the BDS curriculum.
4. To promote and facilitate evidence-based practice in infection prevention and control for dental students by developing and maintaining teaching and assessment resources
5. To oversee, as part of SIPCEP, an audit programme to support undergraduate teaching in infection prevention and control.
6. To provide practical advice and guidance to students on decontamination issues in conformity with NHS Scotland requirements.
7. To provide technical and practical support for infection prevention research projects being undertaken by students as part of their educational programme.
8. To provide infection prevention and control training in both the pre-clinical phantom head environment and at various student teaching clinics.
9. Participate in regular feedback with the NES Infection Prevention and Control Dental Support Team to ensure undergraduate teaching is in alignment with current guidance and its application in general dental practice.
10. Develop, maintain and contribute to the Scottish Dental Schools infection prevention and control teaching network, including development of new and revised SIPCEP modules and assessments in conjunction with NES.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1. The post holder must be a Dental Nurse registered with the GDC.
A2. High level technical knowledge of the full range of procedures within dentistry, including infection prevention and control and decontamination.
Desirable
B1. Working towards, or in possession of, a recognised Infection Prevention and Control qualification
B2. âTraining the trainerâ type training qualification/experience, or equivalent
B3. Membership of an infection prevention and control organisation

C1. Excellent IT skills including the ability to use the Mic rosoft® Office suite, internet, e-mail and digital photography and editing software.

E1. Significant post qualification experience as a dental nurse.

Job Features
Dimensions
Involvement in the co-ordination and organisation of the teaching activities in Infection Control within the BDS Curriculum (approx. 80 students per year covering years 1 â" 3 = 240 in total).
Responsible for both face-to-face teaching (lectures, small-group teaching and clinical chairside teaching) and use of on-line learning materials on infection control for all undergraduate students in BDS Years 1-3.
Involvement in assessment of students in all years of the BDS course, including examining in the BDS 5 Finals OSCE examinations.
Close interaction with both university academic (n=46) and NHS colleagues in clinical areas.
Planning and Organising
Delivering SIPCEP and related clinical activities to a large cohort of dental students at varying stages of training and in different clinical and pre-clinical environments.
Excellent time management and leadership skills to ensure good co-ordination of the training and self-learning activities for the students, mentoring roles of staff and target submission dates.
Compilation of student feedback, exam performance, external examiner reports, annual reports and clinical audits in a timely manner.
Ensure periodic updates between Scottish Dental Schools on infection prevention and control teaching.
Provide regular updates between NES Infection Prevention and Control Dental Support Team and Education (SIPCEP team).
Decision Making
Decisions on how best to deliver infection control training for a large number of students/staff, which maintains a balance with other clinical and educational activities.
Managing sensitive and confidential information on students/staff and making judgments regarding student competence in infection control.
Risk assessment of clinical scenarios where infection prevention and control measures have been compromised.
Internal/External Relationships
Consultant Microbiologists, clinical staff/students and other academic research staff and University administrative / cler ical staff.
External:
Liaison with colleagues in the NHS who have a role in delivering SIPCEP.
Liaison with the NES Infection Prevention Education Team.
Liaison with other Scottish Dental School infection prevention and control teams to facilitate sharing of good practice.
Problem Solving:
Resolving timetabling conflicts.
Dealing with conflicts related to time and resource.
Achieving âbuy inâ of students and academic colleagues.
Reviewing revisions to relevant guidance documents and updating teaching and assessment material.
Standard Terms & Conditions
Salary will be on the Technical & Specialist Grade 6, £28,098- £31,604 per annum Pro Rata
Hours: 28 hours per week.
